Central Wholesale Market, Manama, Bahrain
My wife and I spent several years teaching in Bahrain, and I was fortunate enough to meet and photograph men working in the Central Wholesale Market in Manama.
These men, all undertaking simple jobs for the most part, many of whom spoke English, were always welcoming and friendly. The workers, both stall holders and porters, were gracious, dignified and hospitable, and I’ve never drunk so much tea in my life!
I didn’t know what to expect when I first entered the indoor market. It was huge, very dark and very hot. Narrow corridors led through rows of fruit, vegetable and dried/canned goods, some perfectly presented with their proud owners, other rather more relaxed in their presentation. Some offered a good range of items, others little more than home grown greenery. A wholesale fish market is situated next door.
Not one person declined to be photographed, and, although trading, waited patiently whilst I fiddled with settings!
Everyone I photographed was given a print, and the smiles that lit up faces when I delivered them was magic.
